chapter 1

There are so many secrets that the great ocean holds; so many mysteries yet to be discovered by man. Beneath the crashing, blue waves lies a world all of its own; so blue, so deep. It’s a dangerous world, full of peril and treachery, but possesses a fraudulent sense of peace that can often mislead poor, unassuming victims.

Brooklyn darted around the coral reef, dodging schools of little shiny fish and diving through the maze of sea flora. When most people think of sharks, they feel a sense of dread and fear, but there was certainly nothing scary about little Brooklyn. He loved the feeling of the water rushing past his smooth yellow skin. It was simply exhilarating. He swam faster and faster and faster still! His mind was set on speed. Nothing else mattered…until…BAM!!!! Brooklyn collided with his mother.
“Oh my goodness!” She exclaimed.
“MOM! I-umm. Sorry, I didn’t–I didn’t see–”
“Brooklyn, that's enough of your nonsense. I’ve lost track of how many times I have told you to pay attention to your surroundings. You can’t just dash around like a maniac all the time.” Mommy looked down at her small son with a loving, yet stern look.
“I know. Mom, I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean–-”
“Just don’t let it happen again.” Mommy’s expression softened more. “Brooklyn, dear. I want you to be safe. The ocean is a dangerous place, and you must take caution no matter where you are.” Mommy swam closer to her son. “Come along now. Daddy, brother and the others will be back from the hunt soon. Let’s go and wait for them.”

The pair swam over to an open, sandy plain. The current of the water made beautiful lines in the sand. Brooklyn looked out into the distant ocean. He strained his eyes; looking expectantly for his father and the other sharks to return. As soon as he saw a glimpse of them, he darted towards them. He loved his father, and missed him when he was hunting. Brooklyn wasn’t big enough to go out and hunt yet, and to be honest, he was a little jealous of the big sharks.
“Daddy! Hey Dad!” Brooklyn shouted as he got closer.
“Hiya, son.” Daddy shark approached his small child with a loving look in his eyes. Brookly looked at his father; something was off about him. His eyes were kind as always, but there was something else. Something little Brooklyn couldn’t quite put his fin on. Mommy shark was now close behind her son. She smiled at her husband.
“Hello Daddy Shark. How did it go today?” A somewhat serious look graced Daddy’s face. He looked down for a second, but seemed to shake the look away quickly.
“Ah. It was alright.” He responded, a slightly forced smile appearing on his face. Just then, another shark swam over.
“Hey brother!” Brooklyn exclaimed. Brother muttered some kind of greeting under his breath; his eyes never reaching his excited younger brother.
“Well then, why don't we head home then?” Mommy Shark suggested, smiling at her family.
The four of them began their swim home, which happened to be fairly close by.

When the family returned back to their beautiful coral reef, Brother Shark quickly slunk down to the seafloor and away from the rest of his family. Brooklyn knew that his older brother could be a pain in the caudal fin, but he seemed much more temperamental lately. Brooklyn shrugged off his brother’s attitude and busied himself with poking his head in the various holes and cracks of the reef, scaring the small helpless critters that lived inside. Just as he prepares himself to dive into another hole, Brooklyn overhears urgent whispers in the waters about him.
“This can’t be a good environment to raise a family. The pollution is getting worse every day! And those blasted creatures with those–those things that fly above us on top of the water! They won't leave our home alone! There has to be a better place for us! There just has to be!”
Daddy Shark seemed to be upset.
“Yes, yes. I worry about all of that too, but we can’t move now! Not yet! Where would we go? We need a plan first.” Mommy Shark’s voice was just above a whisper, but it was strong and determined.
“I want what’s best for us, for our sons! If you insist we need a plan, then we’d better come up with one now!”
Daddy shark sounded like he was getting angry. He loved his family very much, and his biggest priority was protecting them.
“You need to keep Brooklyn with you at all times. I don't want anything to happen to him.” Daddy Shark snapped.
“I do! I watch over him very closely! Do you think that I don’t?”
“I just want to be sure.” Daddy Shark turned to swim away. He and Mommy needed to cool down before they discussed things further. Brooklyn felt a strange sensation creeping over him. Something was wrong, and it seemed like it was only about to get worse.
